For a Christian, the Spirit is both the indwelling energy of a loving God and a
mystery of love we will never fully understand. Yet, we are called to live
within that mystery of divine love. Love implies a Lover. A Lover implies a
Beloved. A Beloved implies a bond of love between Lover and Beloved.
That bond of love is the Spirit we know as the Holy Spirit. Source of all
creativity, this Spirit hovered over the original chaos, brought order to
creation, and continues to order creation to this day.
Our best response to this gratuitous gift of love is to long for union with this
Triune God, a longing that will continue to grow in intensity as long as we
live. This yearning alludes to the enigmatic saying of Jesus, “To those who
have, more will be given” (Matthew 13:12). One of the best ways to foster
this desire and grow in an intimate relationship with this Holy Spirit is to
spend time in the silence and solitude of contemplative prayer, resting in the
loving presence of God, and soaking up God’s unconditional love for us.
