We are born into this world with three distinct and powerful human needs –
to be loved, to belong, and to be valued. At the same time, this wounded
world tempts us in three distinct ways – to over-attach to possessions,
prestige, and power. When these three human needs are met, we will have
the strength and the will to reject these temptations, as did Jesus. Blessed
by the Father at his baptism in the Jordan and grounded in the Father’s love
for him, Jesus was able to say “no” to those same temptations in the desert.
This is the message of this chapter of Built For God. Filled with the Spirit of
the one who is Love Incarnate, we will also be able to live grounded in the
love of God for us and let go of any over-attachment to possessions,
prestige, power, and some would add pleasure. A delicate touch is added at
the end of the chapter inviting us into a stance of contemplative prayer,
resting in God’s arms and soaking up God’s love, which in turn empowers
us to trust in that love even more. This is aptly called genuine renewal.
