When we met in January, I realized how devastated Keith
felt because of my lack of action on his behalf, and my lack of
appreciation of the five years and personal cost writing the book
had demanded of him. With that motivation, I made the phone call,
an appointment was arranged, and we found ourselves meeting
with Archbishop Gomez and Fr. Nunes for an exciting visit that
went well over the allotted time.

When Archbishop Gomez expressed both interest and
support for the project, I suggested the book be revised into a more
developed format placing the scripture references partially written
out on the opposite page to each chapter of the Tao Te Ching.
Keith immediately agreed, and asked if I could do that.

Hesitating to take on more work as I was in the process of
writing a book of my own, yet also feeling some lingering guilt at my
lack of immediate action to Keith’s first request, I replied I would,
but only after completing my book. Upon further reflection,
however, I realized as the work involved scripture, perhaps I could
incorporate revising the book into my morning prayer as part of the
Office of Readings, replacing the second reading I would have
already read numerous times. That plan proved to be quite
satisfactory and so the task of revising the book, one chapter every
couple of days, began even before I completed my own writing task.

As I prayed through the text and the scriptures, it dawned
on me how the journey down to California that January with my car
carrying my scooter on a Versahaul and pulling a trailer with my two
sailboards and a kayak was actually a metaphor for the book’s
revision.
