Harmony and unity, serenity and oneness, are characteristics of God that
serve as a foundation for an ideal human life. This first stanza can be seen
as a poetic description of the creation story as the scriptures also describe
it, but also as a reflection of the nature of God as a Trinitarian relationship, a
divine dance or perichoresis: the Father loving the Son, the Son loving the
Spirit, the Spirit loving the Father, an eternal dynamic exchange of love.
The paradoxical nature of that love is seen in creation, where polar
opposites complement each other, such as light, which could not exist
without darkness, and vice versa, yin and yang, male and female, all held
together in delicate balance by the Spirit of the living God.
We are then brought into the mystery of a life of faith in God’s love, which
expresses itself best in humility, selflessness, and total non-violence,
revealed to us and lived out most fully by Jesus, the Word made flesh.
